CMU Shuttle & Escort Services

The CMU shuttle runs frequently throughout the day. In the evening, students may request escort service between university buildings or to residences that are within a 1.5 mile radius of campus.

Pittsburgh City Bus ServiceThe Port Authority of Allegheny County (PAT)

Students may ride buses anywhere in the city and beyond using a current student ID. Known to Pittsburghers as PAT (Port Authority Transit), the bus service in Pittsburgh is fairly extensive, and there are a number of specialty lines that service Pittsburgh cultural and entertainment centers.

ZIP Car

As an alternative to owning a car, students may be interested in an affordable Zipcar membership. Zipcar is the world’s largest car-sharing service, offering self-service, on-demand cars by the hour or day. You only need to be 18+ years old with a valid driver's license for at least two years and a decent driving record. Pick-up and drop-off points are located conveniently on the Carnegie Mellon campus and around the city of Pittsburgh.

Taxi Service

In general, you must call a taxi company to have a car come pick you up. The operator will then request a street address.

Parking

The few parking spaces that are located in front of the INI building require a permit, as do most of the parking lots on the university's campus. Visitors should park at one of Carnegie Mellon's three parking garages:  East Campus Garage, Gates Garage, and Dithridge Street Garage. The Dithridge Street Garage is closest to the INI building. The rates are posted on the Parking and Transportation Services website.

If you have a car, you should be very careful to park legally on campus. Unless a space is metered, it is in your best interest to assume it is reserved. Cars parked in reserved spaces without the appropriate tags will be ticketed.

Generally, there is little need to drive to campus. Most students live near enough to walk, bike or take the PAT bus or CMU shuttle/escort.
