Lisbon Master of Science in Information
Technology – Information Security (Lisbon MSIT-IS)

The INI offers the Master of Science in Information Technology – Information Security program in Lisbon, Portugal (Lisbon MSIT-IS), in partnership with Faculdade de Ciências, Universidade de Lisboa (FCUL)

The Lisbon MSIT-IS degree gives students advanced knowledge in security and dependability to prepare them to be leaders in industry and government. Coursework takes place at the University of Lisbon and uses a hybrid distributed education format that combines locally taught courses with courses taught from Carnegie Mellon via video-conferencing technologies. The program confers degrees from both universities upon successful completion: the Master of Science in Information Technology - Information Security (MSIT-IS) from Carnegie Mellon, and the corresponding Master of Science from FCUL of Mestre em Segurança Informática (a Bologna second cycle officially accredited degree).

The Lisbon MSIT-IS is an intensive, full-time, 16-month graduate program that provides the background, insights and technical coverage of key elements of information security. Set in a lively research environment, the program offers core courses that address the field of information and infrastructure security and dependability and a range of electives that provide the opportunity to study some areas in greater depth. (New business electives added!) Students learn to succeed as managers and technologists in the growing and rapidly changing field of information security.

Graduates of the INI programs enter a range of positions, including software engineer, network engineer, technology consultant, IT analyst, computer systems consultant, systems & software engineer, corporate security officer, financial software developer, security consultant, and Ph.D. candidate.

The Lisbon MSIT-IS curriculum consists of three main components: the core courses, electives and project. The core courses establish the necessary background and a common competence level, and the elective courses build upon the core. The Lisbon MSIT-IS program will be delivered using a hybrid distributed education format with four courses (at least three core) taught from Carnegie Mellon via videoteleconferencing technologies (VTC) and the remaining courses taught locally at the University of Lisbon Lisbon Link by its faculty.

Specifically, this program is designed to prepare students to:

  • Assess the information security risks faced by an organization
  • Evaluate technological tools and protocols available to protect against
these risks, mitigate system vulnerabilities, and restore services
  • Manage the development, acquisition, and evolution of a secure information
    infrastructure
  • Gain expertise in both theory and practice of information security
  • Acquire a detailed understanding of information security challenges in distributed and embedded systems
  • Acquire a detailed understanding of information security challenges in software engineering and how they impact distributed information systems
  • Equip themselves with tools to be security leaders in industry and government
