Women@INI (WINI), a student-led organization, celebrated the end of the academic year with a reception on Friday, April 26. The women who attended included first-year and second-year graduate students, along with INI faculty and staff. Together, they enjoyed ice cream, chocolate-covered strawberries and other sweet treats for their last get-together before students graduate or leave campus to pursue summer internships and special projects.

WINI is committed to promoting and supporting the professional and academic goals of INI students. All year long, the members work to create a nurturing and inspiring learning environment that promotes and celebrates gender and cultural equality and diversity, both within and beyond the INI.

INI Director Dena Haritos Tsamitis led a discussion with the members about the unique perspective women bring to professions that have been primarily filled by men in the past, such as engineering and executive positions, and she encouraged WINI members to continue to provide support and guidance to each other for years to come as they grow their network of professional contacts. The WINI members also discussed the next academic year, with plans to strengthen their WINI alumni connections through social media and other initiatives, to host a discussion on Sheryl Sandberg's new book Lean In and to coordinate a jewelry-making workshop for students.

Events from the past academic year included a social at the beginning of the semester, movie nights, and an evening of chocolate tasting. Every November, WINI's Thanksgiving potluck dinner is a much anticipated event for students, as the international student body shares dishes from their diverse hometowns that span the nation and the world. The organization also runs a clothing drive to collect donations from students for giving to local charities.

The reception concluded with awarding certificates and parting gifts to the graduating students. WINI Faculty Advisor Lorrie Cranor and WINI Staff Coordinator Jamie Lehneke thanked the women for their participation. The organization will pass on the torch to newly elected officers in the fall.
