Ying, 22, a graduate student specializing in the study of mobile
technologies, said the award will help her continue to broaden her
already successful skills and technology toolkit.
"The INI program is helping me become a real trailblazer in the latest
technologies and I'm also extremely impressed with the entrepreneurial
atmosphere and exposure to developing business plans," Ying said.
Under the university's partnership agreement with Alta Associates, a
senior-level EWF participant in the information security field will
mentor the award recipient. EWF (www.ewf-usa.com)
is an elite group of the nation's most influential female executives
specializing in the areas of information technology, risk management and
privacy. It is hosted by Alta Associates, a national recruiting firm
specializing in placement of top-tier executives in a variety of
information technology, risk management and security venues.
"We are proud to welcome Krystal into the EWF community. Our executive
members are looking forward to providing mentorships, support and advice
to Krystal throughout her academic years and beyond. This scholarship
highlights the EWF commitment to mentor the next generation of leaders,"
said Joyce Brocaglia, CEO of Alta Associates and founder of the
Executive Women's Forum.
"The award and mentoring program that we provide through the fellowship,
in addition to the networking opportunities at the annual conference,
are important steps in attracting and retaining highly qualified,
underrepresented minorities, including women, to careers in information
networking and security," said Dena Haritos Tsamitis, director of the
INI and of education, training and outreach for Carnegie Mellon CyLab, one of the largest university-based cybersecurity education and research centers in the U.S.
In addition to the awards ceremony, Tsamitis and Lorrie F. Cranor, director of the CyLab Usable Privacy and Security Lab and associate professor of computer science and electrical and computer engineering,
will be panelists at the Alta Associates' Executive Women's Forum 8th
Annual National Conference: Manage Risk and Drive Innovation, Oct. 20-22
at the Hyatt Regency in Scottsdale, Ariz. This year's conference will
provide panels spanning from information security, risk management and
privacy to rethinking social networking. Attendees of this three-day
conference also will participate in roundtable exercises, incident
simulations and working groups.
Ying also is scheduled to attend the conference and panel sessions,
where she will be introduced to the EWF community and meet her mentors.
Two previous fellowship recipients will join her at the conference, Amy
Rambhia (INI, '08), a program manager at Microsoft Corporation, and
Tyelisa Shields (INI, '10), a system qualification engineer at
Hewlett-Packard.
