Time: September 28, 2012 - 2:30 PM - 3:50 PM

Location: DEC@CIC, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh

This week, the INI's MSIN/MSISTM Seminar hosts Dr. Philip Shelley, CTO of Sears Holdings, and INI alumnus Sandeep Appala, an associate in Sears' Technology Leadership Program. The talk is titled "How Sears Deals with the Data Deluge: Cloud Computing and Open Source Distributed Systems Platforms."

During the semester, the MSIN/MSISTM Seminar meets weekly on Fridays from 2:30-3:50 p.m. in the Distributed Education Center classroom at the Collaborative Innocation Center (DEC@CIC).

Speaker: Philip Shelley and Sandeep Appala

Talk Abstract:

With data volumes increasing by 10-15 fold in the last five years along with increasing IT costs, it has become necessary for companies to embrace open source distributed technologies and a cloud computing environment.

In this presentation, Dr. Philip Shelley, CTO of Sears and CEO of MetaScale, and Carnegie Mellon's INI alumnus Sandeep Appala, TLP associate, provide an overview of how Sears Holdings transformed its organization by building their own internal private cloud computing environment and used open source distributed systems technologies like Hadoop, No-SQL and sharded databases to deal with their data deluge.

The presentation will provide an overview of private cloud computing architectures and how Hadoop is used with other database frameworks to crunch petabytes of data.
