Student Organizations

INI students can participate in a variety of student organizations at Carnegie Mellon. There is an organization at Carnegie Mellon for nearly every interest, including politics, martial arts, sports, astronomy, robotics, spirituality and cultural groups. There are also a number of events that students may participate in throughout the year. Check out Carnegie Mellon's Student Organization Directory.

The following organizations are of particular interest to our own INI students:

Women@INI (WINI)

WINI is committed to promoting and supporting the professional and academic goals of INI students. The goal of the organization is to create a nurturing and inspiring learning environment that promotes and celebrates gender and cultural equality and diversity, both within and beyond the INI. Graduate Organization@INI (GOINI)

GOINI aims to achieve an ideal blend of professional values and social networking skills among students and ultimately create a bond among members of the INI community that will last well beyond their time at the INI. Read more.

Student Advisory Council

INI students play an active part in shaping their educational experience, and one vehicle for this is the Student Advisory Council. Students elected to the Student Advisory Council can express the concerns of the student body to the administration and have those concerns addressed.

National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE)

The Carnegie Mellon Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers strives to uphold the mission of the organization by providing members with the tools to succeed during and after college. By organizing activities that bring Carnegie Mellon's African-American technical students together, we aim to enrich and diversify the campus community. Our organization cannot survive without the participation and support of its members. This year, we have nearly tripled our membership. Our next goal is to engage more members in the programs that our chapter and our National organization offers

Graduate Student Association (GSA)

The Graduate Student Assembly is the student governmental body representing all Carnegie Mellon graduate students. As the custodian of graduate students' activities fees, the GSA recognizes and funds student organizations, funds programs that benefit graduate students and hosts social events for all graduate students. The GSA is also an advocate for graduate students at the campus, city, state and federal levels.

As a parliamentary body, the GSA is made up of representatives from every department on campus as well as a five-officer Executive Board. Each INI class elects a GSA representative, and officers are elected in late fall by the representatives. Any and all graduate students are welcome and encouraged to run for positions as departmental representatives or executive officers.

Conference Funding for Graduate Students

Women@INI Conference Scholarships

WINI awards scholarships each year to students who show academic merit and proven leadership in WINI and other academic programs. These scholarships allow recipients to attend conferences focusing on women in technology, such as the annual Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing.

Graduate Student Conference Funding

GSA Graduate Student Conference Funding is financed by the GSA, in collaboration with the Graduate Support Programs Office and the Provost's Office. The goal of the funding is to enable more Carnegie Mellon graduate students to 1) make presentations at key conferences/exhibitions in their fields or 2) simply attend conferences and learn about the broader field of study to which they belong. This award is $500 per student. Read more.
