Shuttle and Escort Service
The university operates two separate transportation systems for the convenience and safety of our students – the Shuttle Service and the Escort Service. Information, including shuttle service routes, can be found at http://www.cmu.edu/police/escort.htm. Both services are available throughout the year, except on university holidays.
Escort/Demand Service is available daily from 6:30 p.m. to 6:40 a.m. (last run starts), except from 10:30 to 11:00 p.m. and 4:30 to 5:00 a.m. when the drivers take a break and no escort will be available.

I have a question about my tuition and/or scholarship.
Questions regarding tuition and scholarships should be directed to the HUB. The HUB is located at 5000 Forbes Avenue in Warner Hall and can also be contacted by e-mail (thehub@andrew.cmu.edu) or phone (412-268-8186).
How and when do I register for classes?
To register for the required core courses listed on the curriculum page of the INI website and all other courses (restricted elective and free elective), use the On-Line Registration system at http://www.cmu.edu/hub. Click on “On-Line Registration” and enter your Andrew user-id and password. Please note that the standard course load is 48 units per semester.

How do I register for classes at Tepper?
Please refer to Tepper for instructions.
Can I waive core courses?
Very rarely, a core course may be waived if you complete the online petition stating your case.

What is the minimum number of units I must take each semester?
All INI full-time students are required to maintain a minimum course load of 36 units per semester.
What is the maximum number of units I can take each semester?
You may take as many as 54 units per semester.
What if special circumstances require me to take less than 36 units or more than 54 units per semester?
You must submit a petition to take less than 36 units or more than 54 units..

How do I drop a course?
First, meet with your advisor and make sure that the course is not a core course. Then, you may drop courses online at http://www.cmu.edu/hub. September 12 is the last day you may drop a course and receive a tuition adjustment. November 7 is the last day you may drop a course without receiving a “W” grade.
Do I have to take the Research Seminars?
Yes, this is a mandatory class. If you miss more than three classes without justification, you may receive an “R”, which is considered a failing grade.

Who should I talk to if I have questions regarding registration, including adding and dropping courses, or requirements to graduate?

Graduation Frequently Asked Questions
When do I have to determine my curriculum option?
You should make your decision by the end of the spring semester. Specifically, two weeks before the last day of classes (at the latest), please submit your choice of either coursework, industry internship, or academic research project. Then, by the last day of classes, you should submit your course selection, proposal for internship, or proposal for thesis, accordingly. Please submit this information to Natalie Strintzis, natalies@andrew.cmu.edu.
If I choose the internship or academic research option, how do I schedule my project presentation?
Fill out the Project Presentation Services Request form and give it to Natalie Strintzis.
If I choose the internship or academic research option, how do I submit my technical report?
Prepare the report according to the project guidelines and give it to Natalie Strintzis.
Is there a resource available to help me obtain job interviews and/or internships, and to help me learn interviewing skills, resume writing skills, etc.?

How can I get to the INI from the airport and vice-versa?
- Taxi: Fare from the airport to campus averages $33
- Yellow Cab: 412-665-8100

- Port Authority Transit: (PAT) 28X Airport Flyer Bus
The bus stops in front of Carnegie Mellon. The trip takes about 40 minutes. For schedules and rates, contact PAT at 412-442-2000 or visit the PAT website.

I’m having concerns regarding my visa

I want to become a Teaching Assistant (TA). What do I need to do?
First, you must have an offer from the department you will work with. Then, you must request that either the department or Lisa Currin contact the ICC ( Intercultural Communication Center). The ICC will then administer the ITA test, which is a test of English ability. For more information about the ITA test, please see http://www.cmu.edu/icc/testing/ITA/index.shtml.

Technology/Equipment Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if I have any problems or questions regarding computing at the INI or CMU?
Desktop and network computing support for the INI is provided by Carnegie Mellon's Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and includes all desktop and laptop computers for faculty, students and staff, network managed machines, printers, and networked fax machines.
ECE manages problems and questions through an online help system called "gripe." Email gripe directly for all support issues to gripe-ini@ece.cmu.edu.
For faster service, review the instructions on submitting a good gripe email on ECE's Policy and Advice page. Gripes typically will be resolved within three days maximum.
