Program Requirements
Completion of Degree
Students in the Pittsburgh MSIN and MSISTM programs have three options for successful completion of their degree requirements. These options include an academic research-based or development-based project, a corporate internship/external project, or a course option. See the INI Graduate Project page for more details.
Students generally declare their curriculum option by the end of the second semester of study - although it can be declared anytime before that. All project options require submission of a project proposal that must be approved by the INI administration. Projects involving proprietary information that cannot be published may not be approved due to project publication requirements. Students who select the course option must submit a plan of the courses they intend to take by their second semester of study.
Students in the Athens MSIN and Kobe MSIT-IS programs must complete a graduate project.
Core Courses
In the first semester, students in INI degree programs take primarily core courses. The INI Program Documentation Specialist will register incoming students for some core courses, but you must register yourself for others. You may also register yourself for restricted and free electives. However, you must follow the sequence of courses, and you may not waive any core requirements.
MSIN students will be pre-registered for:
- 14-704: INI Research Seminar
- 14-774: Managerial Economics
- 14-775: Business Management
MSISTM students will be pre-registered for:
- 14-704: INI Research Seminar
- 14-730: Introduction to Computer Security
Students should be prepared to drop restricted or free elective courses that conflict with any core courses. Core courses may not be dropped in favor of a restricted or free elective. Students are required to complete their core courses within the time frame provided in the curriculum.
The INI reserves seats in core courses for students according to their program of study. All elective courses are on a first-come-first-served basis
Maximum Units Per Semester
You may take a maximum of 54 units per semester. Students generally take 36-48 units per semester. INI students, whether U.S. or international, must register for a minimum of 36 units each semester; except during the summer.
Undergraduate Courses
You are allowed to take undergraduate ECE/CS courses only if the courses are 300 level or above in ECE/SCS. The only exception is 15-213: Introduction to Computer Systems, which will be counted as a restricted elective if you take 15-410: Operating System Design and Implementation afterwards. Otherwise, 15-213 will only count as free elective.
You may not take any other undergraduate courses for restricted electives except by approval of the INI Graduate Programs Office. However, you may take undergraduate courses as free electives.

Registration Process
The HUB is the center of Enrollment and Financial services at Carnegie Mellon. The HUB is located in the basement of Warner Hall (see campus map ), but the majority of services provided can be completed online using the HUB Web site . Course forms such as Add/Drop, Transcript Request, Audit, and other forms also may be downloaded from the HUB Web site.
All incoming students receive an Andrew ID and password to access the Carnegie Mellon computer system. If you have not done so already, you should register for any elective courses you may want to take.
To register for classes, you generally use your Andrew ID and password to access On-Line Registration (OLR). However, some classes cannot be registered online. Schools and programs that do not provide online registration must be contacted directly by email. These schools include the Tepper School of Business and some courses offered through the Heinz School. Contact information for these schools and programs will be provided during orientation.

Waitlists
Students may be waitlisted in core courses. This is a general practice of Enrollment Services during the registration period, and it does not mean that you will not get into the class.
Students will also be waitlisted for elective courses. These are filled on a first-come-first-served basis. If you are waitlisted for an elective, depending on your waitlist number, it is best to attend the class until you are formally registered in it; this will give you a better chance of getting in since you will not have missed any course work. When a student does not attend a waitlisted course, it is assumed that the student is no longer interested in attending, and they will be dropped from the list.
Tagging Up
This term refers to confirming your position on waitlists. When students register for classes, some will be placed on a waitlist for registration in the class. This is done for one of two reasons: the class is over registered, or seats are left open during the registration period to accommodate students required to take a course as part of their program.
Towards the end of the registration period, Enrollment Services generates emails asking students on waitlists to confirm their position on the list. If a student does not tag up, they are dropped from the waitlist.
Students on waitlists should attend the class until their registration is confirmed by the professor. Failure to do so will result in being dropped from the class roster.
Add/Drop and Course Auditing
You have the option to add, drop and audit courses within a certain period of time at the beginning of each semester (note that audited courses do not count toward required program units). The deadlines for these actions are listed on the Academic Calendar . You should regularly consult this calendar, particularly for deadlines governing Tepper courses since add/drop and audit deadlines for Tepper are different. Tepper is on a different schedule than the rest of the university, and courses are held on a half-semester basis. Mini semesters equal 7 weeks. Mini semesters are listed as fall/mini 1 and 2, spring/mini 3 and 4, and summer/mini 5 and 6.

Student ID
Your student ID can be picked up in the HUB beginning August 1, unless you are registered for Summer courses. Your ID can be used to gain access to university buildings that are locked after 6:00 p.m., and it serves as a bus pass when you have a valid bus pass sticker. You will need to get a new bus pass sticker at the beginning of each semester.
