Message from the Director
In 2007 Carnegie Mellon’s Information Networking Institute (INI)
has continued its strategic global expansion, an achievement
made possible by the dedication and ongoing collaboration of INI faculty and staff and our international partners.
As a result of the efforts at the INI and the support of our international partners, new programs launch in Aveiro and Lisbon, Portugal in the fall of 2007 that follow the model of our programs in Athens, Greece and Kobe, Japan. At the same time, we open the doors to newly renovated classrooms at the INI building in Pittsburgh to accommodate distance
learning with sophisticated video conferencing equipment and beautifully innovative
facilities.
At graduation last spring, the INI celebrated its seventeenth class in Pittsburgh, its
fourth class in Athens and its first class in Kobe. The Class of 2007 represents the
highest percentage of women graduates than ever before.
Both cultural diversity and gender equality are great strengths to our programs, as
well as to the fields of information networking and information security. In support
of this belief, the INI in partnership with the Executive Women’s Forum, sponsored by
Alta Associates, is granting a full scholarship each year for the next three years to a
deserving MSIT-IS student. It is my hope that this scholarship will increase the number
of minorities, including women, who are attracted to our programs.
In the area of outreach, the MySecureCyberspace initiative continues efforts to educate the public about cybersecurity. The portal, www.MySecureCyberspace.com , has added new design features and articles, and it will support the educational tool Carnegie Cadets: The MySecureCyberspace Game at elementary schools in the coming months.
Reliable worldwide communication has been essential to our efforts. I am proud to say that our very growth is made possible in part by the efficient and secure information networks that are central to the research and expertise of our faculty and students. I welcome you to visit the INI to see how much we are ever-expanding. If you are unable
to visit us in person, I encourage you to explore our Web site. Come be a part of our tremendous growth!
